The
Phoenix Film Festival and the Independent Feature Project: Phoenix invites
teachers and students interested in the art of filmmaking to participate
in a series of educational seminars that take place during the day throughout
this year's festival.
Each day different aspects of filmmaking will be explored and student film enthusiasts of all levels will enjoy learning about film, participating in hands-on activities and viewing films made by their peers. From film lovers to filmmakers, and from writers to actors, these seminars are a great way to compliment your school's current curriculum with real world application.
FILMMAKING
FROM THE PROS: ACTION!
Friday, April 13, 2007 o 9 am - 2 pm
This day is for any film-loving student! Panel discussions will be held
with local, national, celebrity and independent filmmakers topics such
as documentary and narrative filmmaking. Also discussed will be the roles
of the filmmaker and the experiences of the panelists. Students will get
opportunities to ask the experts their own questions as well.
FILMMAKING:
THE FUTURE IS NOW!
Monday, April 16, 2007 o 9 am - 2 pm
The focus of this day will be for film students to participate in hands-on
and breakout activities that will walk them through some of the "old reliables"
and new technologies becoming more available and mainstream in today's
filmmaking process. These future filmmakers will get the chance to conceptualize
a storyboard and participate in do-it-yourself green screen technology.
They will also be instructed on current computer graphics that are easy
to do and will add that special touch to their film. They will learn what
will mark their films as "novice" and how to avoid those traps.
SCREENWRITING:
FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN, ASAP!
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 o 9 am - 2 pm
This program will take students through the writing process and will also
address how to deal with the demanding opportunities that new filmmakers
will have to face, i.e. writing your own short, writing for competitions
with strict guidelines (including 48 hour deadlines), and writing scripts
that stay on budget. The breakout session will consist of groups writing
a 2-3-page script or scene. They will pitch their idea and watch their
work performed in a staged reading by local actors. They can use this
experience to wrap up the session and decide what revisions might be necessary
to improve the first draft of their script/scene.
ACTING
MAKES A BETTER FILMMAKER!
Wednesday, April 18, 2007 o 9 am - 2 pm
On this day, acting will take center stage! Whether you are an aspiring
actor, director, casting director, or lighting technician, understanding
the acting process will make you better at what you do. The guest panel,
including a local director, casting director, agent, actor, teacher and
publicist, will shed light on how the actor prepares, auditions and performs
for film, TV, stage and commercials. They will also address how to market
yourself to get the jobs you want. For the breakout session, the panel
will put students through the audition process, including callbacks and
final callbacks, so the participants will really be able to get a sense
for what it takes to be in the biz!
On all four days, a box lunch is included and students will also get a chance to sneak preview the films created by grade school/high school students that will run throughout the festival. This is a chance for any student to become inspired by the outstanding work of their peers.
All four seminars take place from 9 am - 2 pm at the 2007 Phoenix Film Festival held at Harkins 101 in Scottsdale. School groups may sign up for one to four days! Tickets are $10 per student per day and includes a box lunch and materials. Pre-registration is required.
