FAQs
Q: Does my Screenplay
have to fit within a specific genre or budget?
A: No. All genres and budgets are welcome. Screenplays are not judged
on genre or budget.
Q: Can I enter more
than one screenplay in the competition?
A: Yes. There is no limit to the number of screenplays that you may enter.
You must, however, complete a separate entry form and release form for
each screenplay and submit them with the required entry fee.
Q: Do I get a discount
if I enter more than one screenplay?
A: No. A full entry fee is applicable for each screenplay submission due
to our costs to process each and every script.
Q: How does the judging
process work?
A: Every screenplay is read and scored in areas including but not limited
to characters, setting, dialogue, tone, plot/premise and cinematic potential.
Each screenplay is evaluated at least twice. The scores are then averaged
to arrive at a final score for each screenplay. The screenplays with the
10 highest scores advance to the finals.
Q: Who does the judging?
A: All screenplays are read and scored by experienced readers. Every screenplay
that makes the finals will then be read and scored again, with feedback
by a panel of industry experts, including but not limited to WGA west
members and Industry Producers.
Q: Because there are
two categories, does that mean there are two First, Second and Third Prize
Winners and Prize Packages?
Yes! The screenplays with the highest scores in each category will be
announced as our first place winners and each will receive a complete
First Place Winners Package, the screenplays with the second highest scores
in each category will be announced as our second place winners and each
will receive a complete Second Place Winners Package and screenplays the
third highest scores in each category will be announced as our third place
winner and each will receive a complete Third Place Winners Package.
Q: How will winners be notified?
A: All participants will be notified of the results via email. The top
Three Prize Winners in each category will be contacted via email and telephone.
Q: How do I submit my Screenplay to the competition?
For Electronic Submissions go to www.withoutabox.com
For Hardcopy Submissions go to www.phxfilm.com
To request a submission form by mail: Send a self addressed stamped envelope to: Phoenix Film Festival, 2833 N Central Ave #211, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
Q: Can I enter a screenplay
if I live outside of the United States?
A: Yes. International screenplay submissions are welcomed. All submissions
must be written in English and must be accompanied by a money order payable
in U.S. dollars for the entry fee or credit card information for payment.
Q: Can I still enter
my screenplay if I have an agent?
A: Yes. Having an agent does not preclude you from entering the screenplay
competition. There must, however, not be an option on the screenplay you
enter at the time of entry and you must own the material outright.
Q: If I am a Winner,
when can I expect my prizes to arrive?
A: Cash prizes, Final Draft Software, Script Magazine, should arrive approximately
4-8 weeks after the Festival concludes.
Q: Why should I register
my Screenplay with the WGA, west?
A: To protect your creative endeavors. The registry has been aiding in
the creation of legal evidence since 1927 and has been a vital instrument
of the Guild’s service to writers. Click here for more information
about online registration.
